“An Evening With Richard Bandler – Introduction to NLP” is a professionally produced DVD, filmed in London, England 2009 and is just under two hours in length, where the ‘creative genius behind NLP’ explains the origins of his life’s work, gives case studies, demonstrates techniques with members of the audience and spellbinds the viewer with his hypnotic story telling mastery.

Although NLP’s infamous ‘Rapid Hypnotic Inductions’ aren’t demonstrated on the video, to be fair two members of the audience are hypnotised on stage.

Dr. Bandler has been involved with helping people achieve excellence from Business to Athletics for over 35 years. He is world renowned for being able to resolve the problems of ‘impossible clients’ in therapeutic settings. Many consider him to be the best Hypnotherapist in the world today and along with Neuro Liguistic Programming (NLP) he developed Design Human Engineering (DHE) and Neuro Hypnotic Re-patterning (NHR).

In “Introduction to NLP” I found the most value in the fact that you get to see Bandler at his best: In front of an audience with the opportunity for him to be able to interact and play with the audience. Indeed you get treated to two members of the public joining Bandler on stage where he demonstrates his skill and finesse at inducing postive ‘life change.’ The following video clip is from the DVD where he helps a man overcome attachment to his ‘ex.’

Overall I think the DVD delivers on it’s title promise of introducing people to NLP. You’re not going to get better than Richard Bandler himself when it comes to seeing and hearing the real NLP attitude and methodology being demonstrated with real people.

Because Bandler uses some kind of Hypnotic communication most of the time, I found myself confused at times throughout the DVD, but the fact that it’s enjoyable viewing enabled me to ‘get it’ the next time I watched.

There are many aspects that could have been covered in the DVD because NLP is now a wide field. Personally I would liked to have seen Bandler talk more about Sub-Modalities, but of course this DVD is only an introduction to NLP.

With the DVD running at just under 2 hours, the amount of high quality content and the low price, I consider this product a ‘must get’ if you’re a fan of Richard Bandler and NLP. For more information on Richard Bandler’s New DVD please visit, “Introduction to NLP”

Hopefully Dr. Bandler and ‘NLP Life Training UK’ will produce a follow up product, perhaps introducing more advanced NLP concepts and models.

In this short article you will learn about ‘self confidence boosters’ that work within five minutes, but first let’s define just what ‘Self Confidence’ actually is. The online Cambridge Dictionary defines Self Confidence as, “behaving calmly because you have no doubts about your ability or knowledge.” So it’s clear from this that in some situations we can act in a self confident manner because we’re familiar with it and have capabilities and knowledge.

It’s the inevitable situations that arise on a regular basis with which we are not familiar, that trip us up thought isn’t it! New experiences which we have little knowledge about can cause us to doubt our capabilities. So what exactly is this experience of ‘doubting our capabilities’ anyway?

All the feelings we ever experience from fear, doubt and confusion to inspiration and love are all derived from the pictures and self talk we continuously create in our ‘mind stream.’ These patterns of thought are often deeply ingrained habits and therefore function unconsciously out of our awareness, yet have a very powerful effect on our experience of life.

When we find ourselves in an un-resourceful state of mind such as self doubt, we are stuck in a thought pattern. A common one for self doubt would be internal self talk, ragging on you: “You’re such a stupid so and so!” Or it could be that you’re unconsciously seeing an image of yourself, in your minds-eye, when you made a mistake and felt really small back in childhood.

Here’s an essential point though: It doesn’t matter what or where this thought pattern came from. We’re not interested in perverse Freudian ‘personal history’ archaeology are we?! No, what we want to learn is how to change our thought structures with simple self confidence boosters that we can do within five minutes, right?

So how can we re-program our habits of thought, overcome our fears and doubts and increase our self confidence? Well for starters what about counter examples. You can often come up with a counter example. Think about a situation where you lack self confidence. Now ask yourself, “Has there ever been a time when I’ve felt more self confidence in a similar situation?” Just allow yourself to access a memory of this.

Chances are you can find at least one counter example. This leads us into a very powerful ‘operating principle’ in mind programming: “All the resources are already within you.” If you act as if you have the resources you want such as ‘self confidence’ very often you can find them within your memory banks.

Now the other thing about the mind is that it goes in directions. The fact is the future is full of possibilities. It is pure potential. That means if we could program our thought patterns we could create a, “I am learning to become more self confident,” ‘unconscious-software-program,’ enabling us to head towards that desired outcome. This is possible and one of the best ways to do so is through the power of our ‘self image.’

Your self image is simply how you picture yourself in your minds-eye. This happens regularly throughout the day, outside of your awareness. Try this: Remember an occasion when someone gave you a sincere compliment. You know, when you get the warm feeling at the heart. Now in your minds-eye notice what you look like at that instance. Simply picture yourself.

Utilising this ‘self image mechanism’ we can create a self image which we are drawn towards enabling us to access more resourcefulness, capabilities, potentials and possibilities.

Before I finish give this a go: Imagine a you in front of you. This is a you from the future who has learned how to become more self confident, more resourceful and has a great sense of humour. How is that you standing? What is the breathing like? How does the voice sound? Good, now step into this new you and allow yourself to experience those increasing feelings of confidence.

Now, can you imagine, what it would be like if you were to make this self image even more compelling? And what would it be like if you could program this state of being to automatically pop up in just the situations you want to be more self confident and resourceful?

It is possible to do this with the correct know-how. So if you want to learn more about automatic self confidence boosters that you can program into your mind within five minutes, you’d probably enjoy reading my Special Report, “The Half Second Rule”

Tonglen Meditation is a special form of breathing meditation that is known as ‘Taking & Giving’ or ‘Tonglen’ in Tibetan. It enables a person to TAKE in the ‘negative’ aspects or energies of life, transform this energy into a useful purpose (destroying one’s selfish ego) and then GIVE OUT positive healing energy.

The origins of this method go right back to Buddha Shakyamuni and were originally taught from Master to Student.

Kadampa master Langri Tangpa (1054-1123) first wrote down the instructions for this Buddhist meditation technique and Geshe Chekawa Yeshe Dorje (1101-1175) summarized and popularised the method in his ‘Seven Points of Training the Mind.’

Of course you don’t need to be a Buddhist to practice this method of transformation and the benefits of Tonglen Meditation have become more popular due to the work of people such as Michael Breen (NLP Trainer), Steve Gilligan (Psychotherapist, Author – ‘The Courage to Love’) and Michael Neil (Success Coach.)

Transforming Negativity

One of the amazing things about Tonglen is that you can use it to transform any kind of negativity. By simply imagining your anger, hatred, fear, paranoia, jealousy etc. as black smoke you can then begin to transform it. Another outstanding benefit of the Tonglen process is that no Psychological Analysis is required: You don’t need to torture yourself asking questions such as, “Why am I so stupid?” And there is no need for ‘Psychological Archaeology’ – digging around in your past trying to find ‘root causes.’

It’s an empowering process focused on transforming your feelings here and now in the present.

Developing Compassion with Tonglen Meditation

When you have practised and gained some familiarity using Tonglen on your own negativities you can begin to experiment with taking on the suffering of others. Maybe you know someone that is suffering from illness or grieving.

However you may well have some resistance to taking on their suffering at first as Buddhist Nun, Pema Chodron points out in her article The Practice Of Tonglen -

“This is the core of the practice: breathing in other’s pain so they can be well and have more space to relax and open, and breathing out, sending them relaxation or whatever you feel would bring them relief and happiness. However, we often cannot do this practice because we come face to face with our own fear, our own resistance, anger, or whatever our personal pain, our personal stuckness happens to be at that moment.”

“At that point you can change the focus and begin to do tonglen for what you are feeling and for millions of others just like you who at that very moment of time are feeling exactly the same stuckness and misery.”

My Personal Experience with Tonglen Meditation

Like most westerners, when I first came across Tonglen I thought it a bit odd! Most western psychological models are still based on getting rid of things that are wrong or bad. With Tonglen, of course, we accept the negative energy, take it on and indeed harness the energy for transformation! It’s a very beautiful way for dealing with your own problematic feelings. Personally I have found Tonglen to work where other approaches / techniques don’t. Because I’m into NLP modelling I’m not bothered about serious theories of why this or that works, I’m interested in what gets results when you apply it. Tonglen gets results!

I believe it is very special for several reasons: Firstly, as all Spiritual / Shamanic traditions assert, the breath / breathing is sacred. Tonglen directly utilises breathing and as Tantric Meditation Master Geshe Kelsang Gyatso states in ‘Eight Steps to Happiness’ -

“By harnessing our breath for virtuous purposes we purify our inner winds, and when pure winds are flowing through our channels pure minds arise naturally.”

Secondly, the actual act of imagining taking on the negative energy (black smoke) lifts you into a state of courage: A powerful energy field.

From reading and hearing about experienced practitioners it seems once you can deal with some of your own negativities you can begin to practice Tonglen for others. It is said that with practice you can cultivate your love and compassion to the point where you can actually heal peoples suffering directly. Until that time I find it very useful for balancing and calming my own mind.

With the following little hypnotic musing I am assuming you have read my Free NLP mini-Course that explains the NLP Timeline(s) concept.

You will get the most benefit from the following if you have read the free course.

“How to be Optimistic in the Face of Adversity Using the Modelled Simplicity(TM) of the NLP Timeline Techniques”

While gazing at the future on your timeline, notice how you can let it go out even further, expanding your sense of future(s).

And what would happen now if you were to begin imagining spreading the width of your timeline, the breadth and depth of your future(s).

As you look on how else can you brighten and enrich your future?

Could you find yourself turning up the brightness dial in your minds eye? That’s right to the point where your future is just glowing!

More… More… MORE!!!

And what would happen now if you could throw some magical rainbow crystal sparkles onto that timeline.

What could happen if you were to bring to mind one of your most treasured loving memories, feel that feeling at your heart, give it a colour and then imagine sending that beam of love from your heart, right up and through your future(s)?

Could you begin to see that energy as a magical mist permeating both parts of each of you out there in the future of infinite possibilities?

Or would you prefer to think of some of your core values, you know the things that you really treasure and value in life.

Maybe that’s ‘connection in friendships’, maybe you value ‘inspirational learning’ or maybe you value ‘simple contentment’ or whatever comes to mind.

Now allow those special things you value to appear as symbolic images, it could just be a colour.

And then begin to pop those images onto your timeline.

As you look towards your brightened future(s) you can feel an increasing sense of optimism didn’t you as you notice those symbols representing events, situations and experiences you really cherish…

Now why not, as you gaze on, begin to hum the ‘WOW’ mantra to yourself.

“WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW”

Indulge yourself if only for a few minutes…

Because ‘Your Future’ is Worth it, is it not?!

And just for fun, how will you feel, when you wake up tomorrow morning and remember this brightening and enriching future timeline…

P.S. I was just kidding about the “Modelled Simplicity” being trade marked. ;¬))

A short article about how you can 'explode linguistic prisons' using good questions.

A new short article about how we trap ourselves in ‘linguistic prisons’ and ways we can break free of them using simple and effective methods…

“Exploding Linguistic Prisons”

Have you ever heard someone say the following:

“I suffer from low self esteem”
“I suffer from depression”
“I lack confidence”
“I am a shy person”
“I feel insecure”
“I am paranoid”
“I have a problem with anger”

What is implicit in such statements, which are of course beliefs people have about themselves, is that they have a certain problematic feeling that limits their ability to function with flexibility and resourcefulness.

So a general statement describing the above problem states could be:

“I have a CERTAIN FEELING that limits my ability to respond to life resourcefully.”

So let’s use an example of a problem many people seem to ‘have been sold’ these days:

eg) “I have a FEELING OF LOW SELF ESTEEM that limits my ability to respond to life resourcefully.”

The thing with this kind of utterance is that it implies that the problem feeling is universal – spread throughout the persons life.

“I have low self esteem” is an over-genera-LIE-sation which locks people into a ‘linguistic prison.’

There is a really quick way to explode the genera-LIE-sation by finding a counter example. One of the best ways to do this is by asking good questions:

eg) “I have a FEELING OF LOW SELF ESTEEM that limits my ability to respond to life resourcefully.”

You have this feeling ALL the time? Even when you sleep!? Has there never been a time when you’ve NOT experienced those feelings and instead remained resourceful?

“Well, yes sometimes I feel ok.”

Great, bring to mind a specific experience where you felt resourceful. What did you see, what did you hear and how did that feel?

And as you allow yourself to now increase the size of that image, bring it closer, crank the colour and brightness all the way up while hearing the sounds louder and clearer…

You can notice your resourceful feelings becoming stronger right?

What’s interesting is that just with one counter example, straight away, we have exploded the over-genera-LIE-sation.

Do you have low self esteem?

“Well errmm, ok not all the time.”

That’s right…

You could then go on to access more resources, amplify the state by tweaking the sub-modalities, and then program the good feelings into the future(s) using anchoring and future pacing.
